Saint-Émilion is one of the premier appellations of Bordeaux' Right Bank. Home to a number of prestigious châteaux, it has a reputation as being an expensive wine destination. (Beginning in 1955 a classification system was created that elevated the very best properties - 82 châteaux in total - and awarded them the distinction of being labeled "Grand Cru Classé.)
While the wines from these châteaux will frequently set you back a few hundos per bottle, Saint-Émilion is home to several top-notch producers with affordable offerings as well, especially those with the "Grand Cru" designation. These wines have aging potential but drink beautifully right out of the gate, just like today's sensational offer!
Château Abelyce, owned by Famille Alain Aubert, is located in the Vignonet commune of the southern part of the Saint-Émilion appellation, right by Grand Cru Classé property Château Monbousquet. The estate has one 6.2 acre vineyard, planted exclusively to Merlot. Its soil, composed of well-draining, sandy gravel and nutrient-rich clay, provides the ideal growing conditions for this noble varietal.*
Amelie Aubert, winemaker for several châteaux under the Famille Alain Aubert banner, has a special attachment to Château Abelyce. Bought by the family in 2004, it is her own personal project, named after her two children, Abel and Alice.*
The 2023 Château Abelyce Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Bordeaux is crafted from 100% Merlot from 50+-year-old vines. Fermented in stainless steel and aged for 18 months in French oak, it has aromas and flavors of black cherries, blackberries, and cassis. The palate is opulent, smooth, and vibrant, with pliant tannins and hints of cocoa, cedar, and brambly earth. The finish is long, with black fruit notes and a touch of mineral freshness.
