Cascina Penna-Currado is the new venture of the Penna-Currado Vietti family, spearheaded by Elena Penna, Luca Currado Vietti and their kids, Michele and Giulia. Custodians of a cultural and sentimental legacy in the noble lands of the Langhe, Luca and Elena spent over 35 years at the helm of one of Piedmont’s most lauded wineries, Vietti, until both decided to part ways in January of 2023. Their new venture is of entirely different scale, artisanal, and they look forward to building it as a family endeavor with their marvelous mix of wit, wisdom and refreshed ambition grounded by their sound roots and experience in the Langhe.*
The 2023 Cascina Penna-Currado Dolcetto d'Alba Bricco Lago is crafted from 100% Dolcetto sourced from three small vineyards with vines that average 40 years in age. Inspired by elegant Cru Beaujolais cuvées, winemaker Luca opted for five days of cold maceration, followed by 15 days of whole-berry primary fermentation, then spontaneous malolactic fermentation. A short period of barrel aging preserved the crispness and complexity of the grapes. The results? A sensational wine bursting with cherry and mixed berry notes on the nose and palate, with enveloping tannins and a spicy, velvety finish.*

"In the glass, it’s a youthful magenta hue and is fantastic with pure notes of wild berries, cherries, wet stones, violets, and fresh peppery spice...The palate is medium-bodied and refreshing, with a fantastic stony and silky mineral texture. While last year’s release of the 2022 was certainly delicious and very well-crafted, this release takes the energy up a notch and is a slight departure in terms of style, which they are making a mark with. A must-try option for readers who love Cru Beaujolais, this is the direction that the top Dolcetto of the region is headed in, crafted by some of the best, and I highly encourage readers to seek these wines out. Drink 2025-2035."

"This Dolcetto knocks it out of the park and is one of my favorite expressions of the grape from what will be remembered as a challenging year with summer heat spikes. The Cascina Penna-Currado 2023 Dolcetto d'Alba Bricco Lago is also a terrific value that offers the bright flavors and plump blueberry intensity you want when pairing with your favorite pasta dish or a wood-oven flatbread. With 35 years of winemaking experience, vintners Elena Penna and Luca Currado knew exactly what style they wanted to achieve with this entry-level red. The inspiration is Beaujolais. Indeed, some whole-cluster fruit is used."
