Introduction:
Cellers Can Blau was founded in 2003 by the Gil family - best known for their benchmark Jumilla producer Juan Gil - as one of their first ventures outside their home region. Located in El Molar in the DO Montsant, the winery runs on solar energy and draws from a mosaic of old-vine vineyards across the region's varied soils and altitudes. Can Blau is the estate's flagship wine.
Terroir:
Montsant surrounds the more famous Priorat DOQ on three sides and shares much of its geology: ancient slate and granite-schist soils (locally called licorella), extreme hillside terrain, and a continental Mediterranean climate with significant diurnal temperature swings. The mountains act as a natural barrier against maritime influence, intensifying the day-night temperature variations that preserve acidity in the grapes. The Gil family sources from multiple vineyards across different soil types and altitudes within the appellation, blending terroir expression into the final wine.
Tasting notes:
The 2022 'Can Blau" has expressive aromas of blackberries plums, and black cherries, with hints of baking spices, toasty oak, and candied orange zest. The palate is full-bodied and lushly textured, with supple, well-integrated tannins and flavors of blackberries, cassis, and black cherries supported by fresh acidity and a balsamic mineral thread from the schist soils. Oak aging adds structure, vanilla, and cocoa without overwhelming the wine's inherent fruit character. The finish is long and subtly spiced, with a lingering fade of dark fruits, licorice, and mineral notes.
