PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Canon-Fronsac is an appellation for still, dry red wines produced in a small area just west of Libourne in the Right Bank. Its wines are generally superior to the wider Fronsac appellation.
Like Saint-Émilion, just a few miles to the east, Canon-Fronsac has a picturesque, gently hilly landscape made up of woodland, arable land, and vineyards.*
The appellation boasts around 270 hectares (670 acres) of vineyards, just over a quarter of the size of the wider Fronsac title which covers around 800 hectares (2000 acres). Around 1.1 million liters (120,000 cases) of wine are produced under the Canon-Fronsac title annually.*
Château Gaby is a jewel of the Canon-Fronsac appellation. Nestled on a hilltop overlooking the vineyards, the 18th-century château is a stunning representation of the area’s long history of winemaking.**
The first vines were planted on Gaby’s hills in the 1600s. Today, the estate produces some of the world’s finest Bordeaux wines. Lovingly restored in 2006, the interior of the château reflects the beauty of Bordeaux's countryside. The view from the chateau is spectacular and considered the most beautiful panoramic viewpoint in all of Bordeaux.**
Winemaker Damien Landouar has been practicing his craft for 23 years, and now directs operations at the estate. He is also president of the group of winemakers known as Vignerons de Fronsac, and is dedicated to the use of organic viticultural techniques. He utilizes organic practices, and in some cases is moving toward incorporating biodynamic principles.*** His intimate knowledge of the Canon-Fronsac terroir enables him to make wines that are pure expressions of this viticulturally rich land.Â
Today's wine is a blend of 80% merlot and 10% each of cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. Full-bodied and resplendent on the nose and palate with blackberries and red and black currants, it has notes of licorice, vanilla, savory herbs, and toast that add depth and complexity. Tannins are pliant, adding structure without detracting from the wine's silky mouthfeel. This is a powerful yet elegant Bordeaux that can be savored not or over the next 5-10 years.Â
