What is it about the terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape that makes its wines so special? Most of the credit must be given to the region's galets, or large stones that blanket most of the vineyards. Composed largely of quartzite, they retain moisture in the soil during the hot, dry summer months and capture the sun's heat, releasing it at night to hasten the ripening of the grapes.
Thanks to galets, Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines beautifully juxtapose opulence and elegance, fruit-driven characters with minerally complexity, and age-worthiness and approachability. It is no surprise that Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are among the most sought-after in the world. If you haven't already, today's offer will make you fall in love with them!
Clos du Mont Olivet is owned by the iconic Sabon family (of Clos St. Antonin and Domaine de la Janasse fame), who have roots in the appellation dating back to the 16th century. Established in 1932, the estate has 27 hectares under vine in the northeastern part of CdP, the majority of which are planted to red Rhône varietals.
The 2022 Clos du Mont Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a blend of 75% grenache, 10% syrah, and 9% mourvèdre (with 6% cinsault,
counoise, vaccarese, terret noir, picpoul noir, and muscardin) was fermented on
indigenous yeasts in cement tanks. Aged 70% in older foudre, 27% in cement
tank, and 3% in older barrels and demi-muid, it is unfined and unfiltered to preserve the wine's flavor and texture.

"The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is pretty and elegant, with a perfumed, red-fruited, spicy, mineral-laced style. It's...medium to full-bodied and has a beautiful sense of elegance, ample tannins, and outstanding length. While it's not massively concentrated, it has a certain tension and vibrancy that makes me think it will age beautifully. I followed this bottle for multiple days, and it gained depth and richness with time in the glass, so don't be afraid to give it some air if drinking any time soon."

"Aromas of roses, dark cherries, flowers, and garrigue preface the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Clos du Mont Olivet, a medium to full-bodied, layered and textured wine with a dense, fleshy core of fruit, supported by an abundance of sweet, velvety tannins that pave the way to a long, expansive finish...This wine stands out as one of the finest red wines I have encountered at this address. With its structure and complexity, it promises to cellar well for over a decade."

"An extroverted style, with sweet, ripe chocolate-covered cherry and kirsch on a plush, generous frame. Leafy notes add an earthy dimension, while ballasts of iron keep everything firmly anchored. Shows pretty incense smoke threads through the lush, warm finish, with violet high tones."

"The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape has the slight edge over the preceding vintage. Melted licorice, raspberry compote, and jammy black fruits are front and center. Round and concentrated with perfectly integrated tannins, even at this early stage, the 2022 is a triumph and should drink well after release."
