The name Perrin is inextricably tied to the wines of the southern Rhône Valley. For five generations, the Perrins, under the family surname as well as the name Beaucastel (the name of their iconic Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate), have been crafting wines that are benchmarks for other producers in the region. A bottle of Rhône Valley wine bearing the Perrin name is guaranteed to be nothing short of excellent.
Côtes du Rhône wines are so appealing because they draw the wine lover in with compelling aromatics, offer generous fruit characters, and have weight and texture. Marc Perrin, the current winemaker at his family's estate, follows in the footsteps of his predecessors in valuing tradition and terroir above all else. The synergistic marriage of grape varietal to the land is evident in all of Famille Perrin's cuvées, including today's offer. The estate has rightfully assumed its place on the world wine stage and has been on the receiving end of numerous high ratings from the wine press.
While Côtes du Rhônes are considered to be wines for everyday consumption, Famille Perrin raises the bar, as evidenced by today's wine. From the excellent 2018 vintage, this wine is a blend of grenache, syrah, and mourvèdre fermented in stainless steel and aged in a combination of wood and stainless steel vats for one year before bottling.
88-90 points, Jeb Dunnuck:
"A blend of 60% grenache and the rest syrah and mourvèdre, the 2018 Côtes Du Rhône Reserve reveals a vivid purple color as well as impressive notes of black and blue fruits, ground pepper, and wild herbs. It's round, supple, and polished on the palate, with beautiful fruit. It's an impressive Côtes du Rhône." (8/16/19)
87-89 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The Perrins manage all of the vineyards used to source this wine, including Vinsobres for syrah (20%), Orange (Prébois) for grenache (60%), and Saint-Maurice for mourvèdre (20%). Cherries and raspberries ride on a medium-to-full-bodied palate, backed by a plump mouthfeel and silky tannins on the finish." (8/30/19)
