Introduction: Fontodi is one of Chianti Classico's essential estates — a benchmark producer whose work in Panzano over the past five decades has helped define what the denomination can achieve at its highest level. The Manetti family has owned the property since 1968, bringing to viticulture the same exacting attention that made their terracotta tile factory in Ferrone legendary for centuries. Under Giovanni Manetti, the estate converted entirely to certified organic farming and has steadily evolved toward a more restrained, energy-driven style — all while remaining 100% Sangiovese, a declaration of faith in the variety that preceded the appellation's own rules. The Chianti Classico annata is the entry point into the Fontodi hierarchy, and vintage after vintage it overdelivers on its category.

Terroir: Fontodi's 90 hectares of south-facing estate vineyards sit at approximately 450 meters above sea level in Panzano's celebrated Conca d'Oro — the "golden shell," an amphitheatre-shaped hillside that concentrates sunlight and warmth while the elevation and surrounding forests provide cooling diurnal shifts. The soils are Scaglia Toscana — a mix of Galestro (clay schist) and Alberese (compact limestone) — well-draining and mineral-rich, forcing deep root development and contributing the stony, saline edge that defines Panzano Sangiovese. The 2021 vintage in Chianti Classico was exceptional — cool spring conditions followed by a warm, steady summer delivered wines of unusual concentration and freshness, with ripe tannins, vivid acidity, and genuine aging potential across the denomination.

Appearance: Deep, elegant ruby with a dark core and brilliant clarity — a shiny, concentrated color signaling the vintage's density without heaviness.

Nose: Brooding and complex, with black cherry, blackberry, and a touch of blackcurrant at the center, layered with coffee, liquorice, tobacco, and dried herbs. Violets add a perfumed lift, and the Galestro and Alberese soils contribute a stony, mineral undertone that threads through the bouquet. The 2021 vintage shows extra density and meatiness without losing the wild, Tuscan countryside character that defines Fontodi's house style.

Palate: Full-bodied yet precisely structured — ripe, concentrated fruit with genuine energy and tension throughout. Black cherry, blackberry, and plum are framed by gravelly, ripe tannins and the lively acidity that is Sangiovese's natural birthright in Panzano. The combination of large botti and neutral French oak barriques integrates seamlessly, adding spice and complexity without imposing wood character on the variety's natural expressiveness. Refined and charismatic from start to finish.

Finish: Long, mineral, and persistently fresh — dark cherry, spice, and a fine saline mineral quality sustaining a close of real length and focus. The tannins resolve with authority and the finish stays animated and mouthwatering well past the fruit.

Food Pairings:
🥩 Meat: Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragù with pappardelle, or slow-roasted Chianina beef with rosemary
🥦 Vegetarian: Ribollita, truffle and porcini tagliatelle, or roasted eggplant with aged Pecorino and herbs
🧀 Charcuterie Board: Aged Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino Toscano, Finocchiona salami, black truffle honey, and sun-dried tomatoes

Overall Impression: The 2021 Fontodi Chianti Classico is a textbook expression of why this estate remains a Chianti Classico reference point — organic, 100% Sangiovese, estate-grown, and built with both immediate charm and serious long-term structure. In one of the denomination's finest recent vintages, it delivers exceptional complexity and energy for its category. Decant for at least 30 minutes now; the wine will reward patience through 2035 and beyond. Serve at 63–65°F.

94 points, Decanter:
"Emblematic of the exceptional quality offered at Chianti Classico’s annata level, Fontodi’s 2021 over-delivers yet again, exuding the wild, tousled, arid Tuscan countryside on a backdrop of dark, layered fruit. Hints of coffee and liquorice ripple through concentrated black cherry and blackberry. With ripe, gravelly tannins, this shows the power of the vintage without being forceful and maintains charismatic energy throughout. It's worth waiting a few more months before tucking in, but properly cellared, this will easily keep delivering for a decade."

94 points, Vinous:
"The 2021 Chianti Classico is classic wine from the estate, done in the more restrained style that has become the norm here of late. There's plenty of Panzano richness, but more energy and less heaviness than what was common just a few years ago. Giovanni Manetti and his team have given the Chianti Classico gorgeous refinement. Spice, flowers, mocha, and blue fruits linger, all wrapped together by ultra-finessed tannins. The 2021 spent 20-22 months in barrel—65% cask and 35% neutral French oak barriques."

94 points, Wine Spectator:
"This red straddles the fruity and savory sides of sangiovese, revealing cherry and blackberry fruit offset by eucalyptus, juniper, and wild rosemary flavors. Lively and fluid, with tension on the complex, minerally aftertaste. Best from 2026 through 2042. 7,800 cases made, 2,240 cases imported."
