Monferrato, located in the southeast corner of Piedmont, is where you will find impeccable Nebbiolo-based wines that are à propos for special occasions yet are priced for more frequent enjoyment.  Monferrato's gentle hills with calcareous soils and moderating influences from the Mediterranean Sea bring forth wines that are a bit rounder, riper, and more ready for immediate enjoyment. 

Franco Serra is produced by the Sperone family, who have been in the wine business for generations. In 1911, Antonio Sperone opened a small wine shop in Torino, where he sold bulk wine directly to consumers. Unsatisfied with the quality and price of the local wine, Antonio started his own winery in Puglia and built a bottling facility in Torino. While the shop closed during WWII, the winery survived and enabled Antonio’s grandson Giacomo to open a new facility in 1965 near Milan. In 1983, the family purchased 75 acres of prime vineyards in Piedmont and built the current winery in the small town of Mombaruzzo, just outside Monferrato.* 

Aged for 18 months in a mix of barrique and large oak barrels (20% new), the 2024 Franco Serra Nebbiolo Monferrato Superiore has aromas of brambly red cherries and roses. The palate is medium-bodied, with flavors of red cherries and red currants framed by wet-stone minerality, underbrush, and fine tannins, all supported by vibrant acidity. The finish is long, clean, and persistent, with echoes of red fruit and a lingering mineral edge.
