Introduction: Founded in 1761, Giacomo Borgogno & Figli is one of the oldest and most historically significant estates in Barolo — a winery that has changed remarkably little across more than two and a half centuries of winemaking. The "No Name" was born as an act of protest: when the Barolo regulatory board refused to approve one of Borgogno's casks as Barolo due to its color, the winery released it under a deliberately blank label as a rebuke to bureaucratic overreach. Though the wine was later granted appellation approval, Borgogno declined the designation and kept the name — and the defiance. It is now a permanent part of the lineup, sourced from three Barolo zone vineyards and made in an earlier-drinking style designed to complement the winery's long-aging Barolos.

Terroir: The No Name is sourced from vineyards in the Barolo zone — the same calcareous marl and clay soils that underpin Borgogno's flagship Barolos — with fruit from three estate parcels blended to produce a wine of approachable structure without sacrificing the Nebbiolo's essential mineral tension and aromatic complexity. The Langhe designation allows for a shorter aging protocol than Barolo, but the raw material is the same: hillside Nebbiolo grown on Tortonian and Helvetian epoch soils that deliver Piedmont's characteristic combination of floral fragrance, firm acidity, and stony minerality. Certified organic since the 2019 harvest.

Appearance: Ruby red with violet-purple highlights and a slight garnet evolution at the rim — luminous and translucent in the Nebbiolo tradition.

Nose: Ethereal and classically Nebbiolo — violet, dried rose, and wild cherry open the bouquet with genuine fragrance, followed by fresh red fruit, macerated cherry, rose hip, and a thread of classic goudron (tar). Scrubby herbs, cracked pepper, licorice, and a subtle earthiness add savory complexity, while the 2+ years in large Slavonian oak contributes a restrained cedary depth that integrates seamlessly. Beginning to reveal tertiary mushroom and autumn forest floor notes that add dimension without weight.

Palate: Medium-to-full-bodied and impressively balanced — juicy dark cherry, plum, and macerated strawberry carry through from the nose on a palate of firm yet velvety tannins and bright, precise acidity. The structure is dense and meaty rather than heavy — built for the table, not the trophy shelf. Iron, leather, and walnut thread through the mid-palate, and the finish tightens with a characteristic Nebbiolo grip that rewards food pairing. Fresh, well-structured, and more complete than any protest label has a right to be.

Finish: Long, spiced, and mineral — tar, tobacco, rose petal, and a persistent balsamic-herbal note sustaining a clean, dry close of genuine length. Charmingly rustic and deeply satisfying.

Food Pairings:
🥩 Meat: Brasato al Barolo, wild boar ragù with pappardelle, or slow-roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary and juniper
🥦 Vegetarian: Wild mushroom and truffle risotto, porcini tagliatelle with aged Parmigiano, or roasted eggplant with herbs and Pecorino
🧀 Charcuterie Board: Aged Parmigiano Reggiano, Castelmagno, Piedmontese salami, truffle honey, and walnuts

Overall Impression: The 2022 Borgogno No Name is a genuinely compelling Langhe Nebbiolo — one of Piedmont's great overachievers, offering Barolo-zone fruit and two-plus years of traditional large-oak aging at a fraction of its big brother's price and patience requirement. Certified organic, spontaneously fermented, and bottled with real conviction. Drink now through 2030; decant for 30 minutes. Serve at 61–64°F.
