One of Spain's leading wine regions, Jumilla is a wine DO in Murcia, a small region on the Mediterranean coast of southeastern Spain. The Jumilla viticultural area, sandwiched between Yecla in the north and Bullas in the south, is considered Murcia's most important in terms of quantity and quality. It is also the region's oldest, established in 1966. Like other wine regions in the area, Jumilla specializes in wines based on the monastrell grape, which accounts for around 80 percent of vines. It is well-suited to the harsh conditions here, and the best wines demonstrate a varied flavor profile.
Today's luscious wine is crafted from 100% organic monastrell grown in poorly-drained, limestone soils without irrigation; vines growing in these conditions do not produce high volumes of fruit but produce grapes that are ultra-ripe and concentrated.
The 2024 Honoro Vera Monastrell has aromas of ripe black fruits, violets, balsamic notes, and brambly earth. The full-bodied palate is resplendent with flavors of blackberries, cassis, and black cherries, with subtle notes of baking spices, herbs, and black pepper. Plush and velvety with pliant tannins and lively, balancing acidity, this expressive wine is easy to drink whether you pair it with food or savor it sans cuisine.
