Introduction: Named after Loreto Aprutino's most important street — "Bajo," a reference to the bay-colored coats of horses once common to the area — this is iLauri's expression of Abruzzo's beloved indigenous red grape. Founded by Rodrigo and Antonella Redmont in 2007, the estate approaches Montepulciano d'Abruzzo with the same sustainability-forward, terroir-honest philosophy that defines their entire range. At its price point, Bajo is one of the more over-delivering everyday reds from this appellation.

Terroir: Grown on the hillside vineyards of Loreto Aprutino at approximately 300 meters above sea level in the province of Pescara, Montepulciano thrives in Abruzzo's warm Mediterranean climate moderated by Adriatic breezes and the proximity of the Apennine mountains. The combination of clay-rich soils, adequate rainfall, and wide diurnal temperature swings allows the grape to build the deep color, plush tannins, and ripe, concentrated fruit it is known for, while retaining enough freshness and acidity to keep the wine balanced and food-friendly.

Appearance: Ruby red with attractive violet undertones — deep and vibrant in the glass.

Nose: Intense and fruit-forward — dark cherry, black cherry, plum, and blackberry are front and center, layered with chocolate, potting soil, black pepper, and a gentle vanilla and sweet spice note from the oak aging. Wine Enthusiast noted "chocolate, cherries and plums on the nose taking an earthy turn to potting soil and black pepper," while Wine Cellar Club described it as "slightly smoky with dark brooding woodland fruits and a lovely vanilla and sweet spice component."

Palate: Medium-bodied and juicy, with a lively acidic framework that keeps the generous fruit in check. Flavors of sour cherry, dark cherry, and blackberry are complemented by earthy spice and a velvety tannin structure that is supple and approachable from day one. The six months in large Slavonian oak barrels adds roundness and spice integration without overpowering the wine's inherently fruit-driven character. Easy and satisfying from the first sip.

Finish: Medium in length, clean, and fruit-forward, with a pleasant earthy, peppery fade and a gentle sweetness from the oak that rounds out the close. Tannins are dusty and forgiving.

Food Pairings:
🥩 Meat: Grilled lamb chops, Abruzzese-style sausage and peppers, or a hearty Sunday ragù over pasta.
🥦 Vegetarian: Baked lasagna with ricotta and mushrooms, eggplant parmigiana, or a rustic lentil and sausage stew.
🧀 Charcuterie Board: Aged Pecorino, sharp provolone, soppressata, roasted peppers, and marinated artichoke hearts.

Overall Impression: A reliably satisfying, honest Montepulciano d'Abruzzo that delivers the warm, fruit-driven, approachable character the appellation is loved for. The 2023 is best enjoyed now through 2027, while the fruit is at its most vibrant. Serve at 60–64°F; no decanting necessary.
