Portugal's premier consulting winemaker for decades as well as the owner of several wineries under the João Portugal Ramos Vinhos umbrella, Ramos was the driving force behind the mass adaptation of modern winemaking technologies, the use of oak barrels for aging, and low yields, all of which bring forth the full-bodied wines that have become the hallmark the Portuguese wine industry.
Alentejo is a large geographical area in Portugal located south of the Tejo River that encompasses about 30% of the country's landmass. Its growing season is, for the most part, hot and dry, but its diversity of soils and terrain make it hospitable to many grape varietals. Alentejo received DOC status in 2003, thus enhancing the region's reputation as a producer of high-quality wines.
The 2024 Marquês de Borba Tinto Colheita is a blend of Aragoñez, Trincadeira, Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, Petit Verdot, and Merlot sourced from the sub-region of Borba. The grapes are stainless-steel fermented and the wine is aged in second and third use French and American oak barrels for 6 months. It has aromas and flavors of black cherries and cassis complemented by hints of brambly earth and baking spices. The palate is medium- to full-bodied and silky smooth, offering a seamless balance between fresh fruit, harmonious acidity, and soft, approachable tannins.
