Les Mesnil-sur-Oger, about 12 miles south of Epernay, is one of 17 villages in Champagne awarded the designation Grand Cru for its superior fruit. Le Mesnil is the cooperative of grape growers in the region; they have pooled their resources (acreage and mad skills) to craft bubbles that are worthy of the Grand Cru designation. The NV Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut Champagne is the gorgeous fruit of their efforts. THESE ARE KILLER BUBBLES, PEOPLE!
The deets: Made from 100% Chardonnay (hence the designation Blanc de Blancs, which means white wine from white grapes). Malolactic fermentation carried out in full*. 3 years on the lees**. Aged for an additional 6 months in bottle. The resulting juice is complex and delicious, striking a delicate balance between fruit-driven acidity and creamy texture.
Josh Raynolds of Vinous: Rated 92 points:
"Light, green-tinged yellow. Mineral-accented aromas and flavors of candied orange, pear, white flowers, and ginger. Juicy and precise, presenting lively citrus and orchard fruit flavors underscored by chalky minerality. Dry and incisive on the finish, which shows outstanding clarity and persistence."
