PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
Bodegas Martínez was founded in 1895 by Eloy Martínez, a Haro native who was dedicated to the elevation of wines from his native Rioja. Utilizing modern winemaking techniques while adhering to traditional, time-honored practices, he was instrumental in ushering the winery - and the region -  into a new era, getting the wines of Rioja onto the world wine stage. Today, the 4th generation of the Martínez family is at the helm of the winery and has continued Eloy's quest to be at the forefront of quality Rioja wine production.

Today's wine takes its name from the fossilized shells found in the soil from a time when the whole region was under the sea. Using tempranillo as its base, the wine also features garnacha and mazuelo grapes. This is a coupage that is very characteristic of a Rioja produced from Haro vineyards that are over 40 years old. The wine spends 36 months in American oak barrels and is manually decanted six times throughout the barrel-aging process. *

The "Hinia" has an intense cherry red color with a marked garnet edge. It has aromas and flavors of ripe black fruits flanked with balsamic notes, tobacco leaves, caramel, vanilla, and chocolate. The palate is fresh, with a well-balanced acidity and smooth tannins.*

92 points, James Suckling:

"Aromas of ripe plums and black cherries with hints of walnuts, sweet spices, dark chocolate, and wet earth. Creamy and polished, with medium to full body, chalky tannins, and crunchy acidity. Deep core of ripe dark fruit and a lingering, chocolatey finish with a touch of leafiness to it. Drink or hold." (9/9/22)
