PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:

Clos Martinet is made from grapes sourced from vineyard plots situated around the village of Gratallops (Pro tip: Gratallops wines are particularly spectacular. If you see the name Gratallops, get the wine.).

The slate soil and sloping vineyards give the wine a distinct character year after year. The vineyards are planted primarily to native varietals garnacha and carignan as they best express the character of Priorat.

Mas Martinet, established in 1981 by wine lovers and farmers Josep Lluís Pérez and Montse Ovejero, is one of the wineries responsible for putting the Priorat on the world wine stage. The Pérez and Ovejero families are dedicated to the preservation of Priorat varietals and winemaking traditions.

Sara Pérez, daughter of the property's founders and the current winemaker at Clos Martinet, takes a non-interventionist approach to her craft, only using indigenous yeasts and letting nature be the primary determinant of the finished wines' character.

The 2019 Mas Martinet Clos Martinet is a blend of 65% grenache, 20% syrah, 10% carignan, 4% merlot, and 1% cabernet sauvignon fermented in concrete tanks and aged for 17 months in a combination of amphorae, demijohns, and Austrian oak barrels. It has aromas of black fruits and a medium-to-full-bodied palate of black cherries, currants, figs, and blackberries layered with notes of saddle leather, licorice, toast, and wet stone. Firm yet pliant tannins add structure, and the wine finishes long. Check out the press!

95 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:

"The 2019 Clos Martinet, one of the wines produced in the first vintage of the new Priorat in 1989 by the father of Sara Pérez, is still a blend of garnacha, syrah, carignan, merlot, and cabernet sauvignon. The nose is dark despite the lowish alcohol (13.5%) and has an earthy touch, with...abundant grainy tannins. (9/22)

92 points, Vinous:
Saturated ruby. A highly perfumed, smoke- and spice-accented bouquet evokes primary cherry and blueberry scents, along with candied licorice and potpourri nuances. Seamless and impressively concentrated, offering appealingly sweet dark berry, cherry cola, and floral pastille flavors that meld richness and energy. Dusty tannins build steadily on a long, gently chewy finish that leaves cherry liqueur and lavender notes behind. (9/21)
