Merlot is often a supporting player, blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to complement that varietal's bold fruits and firm tannins, but it can truly shine when it is the star of the show. Put it in the hands of a winemaker from one of the Napa Valley's most illustrious winemakers, and magic happens!
Shafer Vineyards has been the site of grape growing and commercial winemaking since 1880, during Napa Valley’s first boom as an American wine destination. When John Shafer, a Chicago publishing executive, purchased the site in 1972 and spent the next decade planting his hillside plots, he set the stage for the winery’s ascension to greatness. Joined by his son Doug in 1983 and winemaker Elia Fernandez the following year, he forged the trademark Shafer style of elegance, richness, and balance. Since then, Shafer Vineyards has been the recipient of hundreds of accolades and terrific reviews for its cuvées and has cemented its reputation as one of the Valley’s most celebrated wineries.*
Sourced from vineyards located on the rugged lower slopes of the eastern Vaca Mountains in Yountville along with other top vineyards sites, blended with 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec, and aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels, the 2023 Shafer Merlots offers abundant layers of red plum, dark cherry, and raspberry lifted by violet and lavender florals. Notes of vanilla, baking spices, and cherry pie evoke richness, while cranberry and subtle herbs add vibrant freshness. Seamlessly integrated tannins carry through to a remarkably long, graceful finish.*

"Polished and well-structured, with handsome red and black currant flavors highlighted by spices including cinnamon, plus a touch of tomato leaf, as this persists toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2033."

"Shafer fans will be delighted to learn that the Merlot is back with the 2023. Bright acids lift a core of red fruit and blood orange. This cool-toned, refreshing Merlot is an absolute delight. Readers will find a wine of total sophistication. Drink it over the next handful of years."
