PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Opstal Estate’s rich history dates back to 1847 when JC Rossouw acquired the farm De Opstal bij de Fonteine. Just over a century later in 1950, 4th generation Carl Everson decided to make his own wine instead of joining the local cooperative winery like many other producers. Today, Opstal has a wide range of quality estate wines under three different labels: the fun, easy-drinking, and pocket-friendly Sixpence Range, the classical and food-friendly Estate Range, and the exclusive heritage Range.*
Today, the Opstal estate is overseen by the 6th and 7th generations, Stanley and Ria Louw and their sons, winemaker Attie Louw and production manager Zak Louw. They are honored to have staff whose families have worked at Opstal for two and even three generations. The Sixpence wines are made from grapes grown where sheep once grazed and were named after a local legend, shepherd Daniel Smiles who went by the nickname Sixpence.
The 2022 Sixpence Proprietary White is a blend of 60% sauvignon blanc and 40% sémillon. It has citrus and floral aromas and ripe flavors of grapefruit, lemon peel, and nectarine. The mid-palate is rich and the finish has juicy acidity.
