Introduction: Stemmari is one of Sicily's most widely distributed and reliably quality-driven producers, part of the Mezzacorona Group with vineyards concentrated in the sun-baked interior of the island. Their Nero d'Avola is a straightforward, crowd-pleasing expression of Sicily's signature red grape — approachable, fruit-forward, and unapologetically easy-drinking. The 2023 won Gold at the Berlin Wine Trophy, a consistent recognition across recent vintages.

Terroir: Grapes are sourced from two distinct growing areas: Sambuca di Sicilia in the province of Agrigento, where clay-rich soils produce structured, bold Nero d'Avola, and Acate in the province of Ragusa. The intense Sicilian sun and the dry Mediterranean climate push Nero d'Avola toward generous ripeness, while the clay soils retain enough moisture to prevent the vines from stressing during peak summer heat. Harvest typically occurs in the first week of September.

Appearance: Deep ruby red with appealing violet highlights, vibrant and clear in the glass.

Nose: Generous and immediately inviting — currant, wild strawberry, pomegranate, and dark cherry lead, with subtle hints of spice, Mediterranean herbs, and toasted almond in the background. A warm, sun-drenched quality to the fruit is unmistakably Sicilian.

Palate: Medium- to full-bodied, soft, and velvety in texture, with flavors of dark cherry, black plum, and blackberry backed by mocha and gentle spice. Tannins are smooth and well-integrated after six months in French barriques, and the acidity is moderate — enough to keep the wine fresh and food-friendly without demanding attention. Anthony Gismondi described the style as "an excellent mid-week red" with a "pomegranate seed finish."

Finish: Medium in length, fruity and clean, with a pleasant savory note and a gentle almond-tinged fade that is characteristic of the variety.

Food Pairings:
🥩 Meat: Lamb chops with rosemary, sausage and peppers, or a simple Sicilian ragù over pasta.
🥦 Vegetarian: Spaghetti alla Norma with eggplant and smoked ricotta, baked pasta with tomato and ricotta, or a spiced lentil stew. |
🧀 Charcuterie Board: Aged Pecorino, spicy salami, Castelvetrano olives, sun-dried tomatoes, and Marcona almonds.

Overall Impression: An honest, well-made everyday Nero d'Avola that delivers reliable Sicilian character at an outstanding price. Accessible, versatile, and best enjoyed young and fresh. Serve at 60–64°F; drink now through 2026.
