Introduction: Tenuta Argentiera was founded in 1999 by the Fratini family in Castagneto Carducci — taking its name from the ancient Etruscan silver mines (argento) that once ran beneath these coastal hills. The estate occupies a uniquely privileged position within the Bolgheri DOC: closest to the Tyrrhenian Sea of any estate in the appellation and simultaneously one of the highest in altitude, with vineyards climbing to 220 meters above sea level. Poggio ai Ginepri — named for the juniper-covered hillside where it originates — was the estate's inaugural wine in 2002 and remains its most recognizable label, described by the winery as an entry point that performs in the style of a Bolgheri Superiore.

Terroir: The Poggio ai Ginepri vineyards sit at 80–100 meters above sea level on west-facing slopes closest to the ancient Via Aurelia coastal road, where soils are characteristically red and sandy — the direct influence of the Tyrrhenian Sea's ancient presence. This proximity to the coast generates constant maritime breezes that ventilate the canopy, reduce disease pressure, and moderate temperatures through significant diurnal swings that preserve freshness and acidity in an otherwise warm Mediterranean climate. The estate's five vineyard sites span a remarkable range of soils — from red sandy loam in the lower coastal sections to limestone and clay at higher elevations — lending complexity and structural backbone to the Bordeaux varieties that thrive across all of them.

Appearance: Deep, intense ruby with vivid purple reflections — saturated and youthful in the glass, with excellent density.

Nose: Broad, fragrant, and immediately welcoming — cherry, plum, and blackcurrant open the bouquet with generous fruit intensity, interwoven with pressed blackberry, juniper, and earthy sweetness. Hints of white flower, licorice, and warm spice layer in as the wine breathes, while the half-and-half oak and stainless aging contributes subtle cedary depth without dominating the fresh fruit character. The nose is at once immediate and complex — classic coastal Bolgheri in its sun-drenched ripeness and Mediterranean herbal lift.

Palate: Full-bodied, structured, and surprisingly plush — black cherry, plum, morello, and currant fill the mid-palate with real concentration and freshness, energized by well-calibrated acidity and moderately firm, perfectly smooth tannins. The Cabernet Sauvignon provides backbone and dark fruit depth; Merlot delivers roundness and texture; Cabernet Franc adds a lifted, savory herbal energy; and Petit Verdot contributes the wine's characteristic spice and color intensity. The balance between structure and accessibility is the wine's defining quality — powerful yet polished, with a fruit-forward immediacy that requires no patience.

Finish: Clean, long, and lightly spiced — mulberry, morello cherry, and a fine mineral thread sustaining a fresh, mouthwatering close of genuine length. The finish reveals no heaviness despite 14.5% ABV.

Food Pairings:
🥩 Meat: Grilled bistecca with rosemary, slow-braised short ribs with tomato and herbs, or roasted lamb with garlic and Mediterranean herbs
🥦 Vegetarian: Pappardelle with a rich mushroom and tomato ragù, roasted eggplant with capers and olives, or a lentil and root vegetable stew with smoked paprika
🧀 Charcuterie Board: Aged Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano Reggiano, Tuscan salami, sun-dried tomatoes, and Castelvetrano olives

Overall Impression: The 2023 Poggio ai Ginepri is a confident, generously structured Bolgheri Rosso that consistently punches above its category — delivering the coastal Tuscan terroir's characteristic combination of Mediterranean warmth and maritime freshness in an immediately enjoyable, well-made Bordeaux blend.
