Located high on a hilltop in central Sicily, fifty kilometres from Palermo, between lakes and hills, the historic Regaleali estate dates from 1830 and has been producing wine for over 200 years. The estate, a former royal stronghold (from the Arabic “Rahl Ali”, meaning “the house of Ali”) covers 500 hectares, used for the cultivation of grains, fruit trees, olive trees and grape vines.
The estate in its dominant position on the hilltops looks like an oasis, an immense lush garden of vines and olive trees, surrounded by a desert landscape of harvested wheat fields. Its location on top of a hill and its distance from the sea guarantee a more continental climate in comparison to other parts of Sicily. The winters are cold, while during the summer there is a significant temperature variation between the night and the day – a crucial requirement for growing grapes rich in flavours and fragrances.
The Tasca family has prioritized company-wide sustainability and is recognized for their impressive environmental efforts on an international scale. For instance they received the Robert Parker Green Emblem in 2021.
At Regaleali the indigenous Sicilian grape variety Catarratto is cultivated up to 900 metres above sea level. It is a very late ripening grape, in fact it is the variety that ripens the latest, even later than the reds, and hence brings the harvest season to a close. The result is a wine of sublime quality, stripped of the coarse qualities the variety usually has in lower coastal areas. Regaleali believes very strongly that "if you have an ounce of common sense, Sicilian Catarratto is the right variety to cultivate."
Hence they have given their Catarratto the name "Buonsenso", meaning wisdom, and yet also because it tastes good and pleases the senses.
