The Zuccardi family is one of the preeminent winemaking dynasties in Argentina. Starting with the establishment of their winery in Maipú, Mendoza, Bodega Santa Julia, the family has been a pioneer in the craftsmanship of sustainable wines that are pure expressions of Mendoza terroir. Over the years, they expanded with the purchase of vineyards in Mendoza’s prized Uco Valley and the opening of their namesake Uco Valley winery. Third generation winemaker Sebastián Zuccardi is currently at the helm and has brought the winery accolades too numerous to count here, including World’s Best Winery.*
The Zuccardis’ Q line of wines was first made in 1999 and was the first to bear the family name. They are made from grapes sourced from select plots throughout Mendoza that reflect the region’s diversity; the letter Q (for quality) was traditionally used to indicate which plots would be selected for the final blend.
The 2017 Zuccardi Q Malbec is a monovarietal made from grapes grown in two Uco Valley vineyards, located in Paraje Altamira in San Carlos and Los Chacayes in Tunuyán. Both sites possess the viticultural gifts of the valley: high elevation, abundant sun exposure, alluvial soils, and wide diurnal temperature variations which bring forth wines of incredible depth and intensity. Sebastián eschews heavy use of new oak in favor of concrete tanks and seasoned oak barrels so the characteristics of the varietal and the terroir can really shine.
94 points, James Suckling:
"Beautiful texture to this with dark berry and blueberry character and hints of flowers and cedar. Medium to full-body with a pretty opened palate and a long and flavorful finish. Round and polished tannins. No new wood. Drink now or hold." (3/27/19)
92 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2017 Q Malbec wants to showcase the variety in the Valle de Uco using grapes from Altamira and Chacayes. It fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts and with some full clusters that were broken, and it matured in concrete and used French barriques. This differs from the Serie A in the vineyards; here, they look for more texture and less fruit, aiming for sharper and more austere, in the direction of Concreto. It's impressive how the wines from Zuccardi have improved in the last few years and how a wine at this price can have such precision and purity. No excess in any direction. Superb." (6/29/18)
91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
Pure black plum along with natural dust and spice notes make for an alluring nose. This blend of Malbec fruit from Paraje Altamira and Vista Flores, both subzones of the Valle de Uco, is direct and abrupt on the palate, with grit. Meaty gamy slightly salty berry flavors are intense on a juicy finish with rubbery tannins. (11/1/18)
90 points, Wine Spectator:
"A robust red, with dark plum, dried cherry, and wild herb flavors that are filled with muscular tannins. Intense dark chocolate notes linger on the racy finish. Drink now through 2021." (12/31/18)
