PRODUCT OVERVIEW / REVIEWS:
Bodegas Franco-Españolas was established in 1890 by Bordeaux native Frederick Anglade Saurat, who capitalized on France's dependence on good wine from the region after its vineyards were devastated by phylloxera disease. From the release of its first vintage, the winery established itself as a benchmark for the production of top-notch fine wines. Since 1984, the winery has been owned and managed by the Eguizábal family; today, the third generation, led by Borja Eguizábal, continues the tradition of crafting world-class wines that are loved by the wine press and sought after by aficionados throughout the world.

The 2011 Bodegas Franco-Españolas Bordón Rioja Gran Reserva is crafted from tempranillo, graciano, and mazuelo from vineyards in the 3 sub-areas of Rioja with different soil types: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental. The wine is aged in new and second-year medium-roasted white American (Ohio) and French oak barrels for 30 months, with decanting every 6 months to facilitate the natural filtering process. It then stays in the bottle for 36 months for refinement. (from winery notes)

94 points, Decanter:
"Rich gran reserva style, joining the elegance of long aging and the intensity of ripe and concentrated fruit. Very long, with a most promising potential for future development in bottle." (11/30/21)

91 points, Vinous:
"Dark garnet. Ripe red and dark berries, smoky oak, coffee, and a hint of vanilla on the fragrant nose. Smooth and broad on the palate, offering pliant, smoke-accented cherry-vanilla and black currant flavors that tighten up and turn spicier through the midpalate. The spicy nuance adds lift to a smooth, smoky finish that features velvety tannins, a touch of coconut, and a strong echo of jammy red berries." (1/21)
