PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Domaine du Château de Pierreclos is a small, family-owned winery with 8 hectares of vineyards. This historic estate is located in the Mâconnais region of southern Burgundy, the winery located between the Solutré rock and the Cluny abbey. This winery makes several types of Mâconnais wines, including this Saint-Véran, which is quite comparable in quality to its neighboring appellation of Pouilly-Fuisse, yet often a better value, as is the case here.
Jean-Marie & Anne-Francois Pidault's modest holdings allow them more time to lavish on their land and vines. They farm ORGANICALLY and have a non-interventionist philosophy regarding winemaking; they espouse lees-aging and eschew filtration. The resulting wines seamlessly blend richness with minerality.
Today's wine is a mono-varietal from the Lieu-Dit of Grand Bussière in the AOC of Saint-Véran, where the vines, which average 44 years in age, benefit from a southern exposure. It is fermented and aged in a combination of new and seasoned oak barrels and oak vats, which gives it the perfect balance between rich texture and terroir-driven acidity.
