PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Tenuta di Trinoro was established in 1992 by Andrea Franchetti and is situated in a remote corner of southeastern Tuscany called the Val D'Orcia, a natural amphitheater where the climate is warm and well-protected by the surrounding hills. The estate consists of 23 hectares of vines between 1300 and 2000 feet in altitude. Cabernet franc and merlot are the heart of the estate, and there are smaller plots of cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot as well. High-density planting, fruit selection in the vineyard, low yields, full phenolic ripeness, and concentration give these wines a unique and unmistakable personality. (from importer notes)

Although very new to winemaking in the early 90s, Andrea was a true visionary who displayed a deep understanding of the intricacies of terroir and a talent for the craft. After spending time in Bordeaux and subsequently discovering that the soils in his vineyards were similar, he made the decision to plant all Bordeaux varietals. Indeed, his nickname "The Wine Philosopher" is well-earned!

The second label of Tenuta di Trinoro, Le Cupole was first produced in 1995. The 2020 is a blend of 49% merlot, 36% cabernet franc, 12% cabernet sauvignon, and 3% petit verdot, with percentages varying with each vintage. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in one to three-year-old barriques and cement, Le Cupole is velvety and approachable. This wine hits the palate with exuberance, full of fleshy, bright fruit, extracted tannins, and rich color. (winery notes)

93 points, Rober Parker's Wine Advocate:
"This is a terrific value proposition. The 2019 "Le Cupole" is a blend of 47% merlot, 30% cabernet franc, 15% cabernet sauvignon, and 8% petit verdot. The first vintage was made in 1995, and although these four varieties have been used in the blend since the beginning, the various percentages change according to vintage conditions. This long 2019 growing season was a little more challenging for the late-ripening cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. The wine delivers plenty of rich concentration and ripeness, but there is also a pureness to the fruit that happily underscores its cheerful and informal personality." (10/7/21)

92 points, Vinous:
"The 2019 Le Cupole offers a beguiling mix of intense red-fleshed fruit intermingled with sweet floral, spice, and citrus notes that lend brightness. Medium in body and silky, the 2019 is one of the most polished "Le Cupoles" I can remember tasting." (7/22)

90 points, Wine Spectator:
"Appealing aromas of black cherry, raspberry jam, and plum pick up accent notes of earth and almond in this solid red, which is balanced and shows fine length on the finish. Merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet ssauvignon and petit verdot." (12/15/21)
