Chappellet was Established in 1967 by Donn Chappellet, who wanted to craft bold California wines that rivaled the First Growths of Bordeaux. Eschewing the more popular Napa Valley growing areas, he settled on the little-known Pritchard Hill, believing its exceptional terroir would allow him to realize his dream. He was right; this off-the-beaten-path destination in the Vaca Mountains offers high elevation, steep hillside vineyards above the fog line with superior sun exposure. This, in addition to the area's well-drained volcanic, loamy soils, brings forth wines of unparalleled depth and concentration.

Today's offer has been Chappellet's signature wine for over three decades. A blend of 79% cabernet sauvignon, 8% petit verdot, 7% malbec, and 6% merlot soured from Pritchard Hill, it displays aromas of cassis, black cherry, and boysenberry, as well as notes of fresh herbs and French oak-inspired hints of vanilla, cardamom, and clove. On the palate, it is beautifully full-bodied with supple, polished tannins and alluring layers of dark berries and spice, with notions of dark chocolate, espresso, sage, and anise emerging on the long, dramatic finish. "This is a marvelously compact and coiled-up wine with a towering structure. Very beautifully fragrant dried purple flowers and herbs. Full-bodied with loads of succulent ripe blackberry, creme de cassis, graphite, and loamy earth.
