Lirac wines are comparable in style to those from Châteauneuf-du-Pape because they share similar climate and soil, which is characterized by galets, or large stones that retain the heat of the sun and help to ripen the grapes. Domaine Maby is a family-owned estate that dates back to the early 19th century and is based in Tavel. The winery began to reach its full potential in the 1960s when it expanded its vineyard holdings into the region of Lirac. Today, Domaine Maby has 60 hectares of vineyards in Tavel, Lirac, and Côtes du Rhône that are sustainably farmed in order to protect the environment and to ensure the purest expression of terroir in its finished wines.
The "La Fermade" is a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah sourced from vines with an average age of 39 years. Stainless-steel fermented and aged, it is medium-to-full-bodied, with a nose of black fruits and herbs de Provence that leads to a palate of cassis, baking spice, wet stone and the merest hint of licorice.
2016 was an excellent vintage in the southern Rhône, receiving 99 points from Wine Spectator: "This truly rare vintage is a new benchmark. The growing season was warm during the day but cool at night, with an unusually large diurnal swing that led to slow, even ripening across all varieties while maintaining acidity. Reds are laden with fruit, yet extremely racy and fresh in feel; whites are pure, brimming with energy."
91 points, Jeb Dunnuck:
"Already bottled, the 2016 Lirac La Fermade (54% Grenache, 24% Mourvèdre, and the balance Syrah) is medium to full-bodied, concentrated and textured, with the fruit-forward, sexy fruit profile of this terrific vintage. Leafy herbs, lavender, blueberries and a kiss of graphite all emerge from the glass and it has sweet tannin and outstanding length. It too should keep through 2026, although there’s no need to delay gratification." (10/19/17)
91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Matured in stainless steel rather than barrels, La Fermade stands out for its vibrant, transparent fruit character. Blackberry and plum flavors are crisp and pristine on the palate, edged by fresh acidity and fine, persistent tannins. It's an easy-drinking but finessed wine with a lingering garrigue finish. Drink now through 2022." (5/1/19)
